Represent was created in collaboration with a team of expert advisors and educators.

Tarajean Yazzie-Mintz, Ed.D., is the founder and principal consultant at First Light Education Project, which helps indigenous individuals, groups, and communities reach their educational goals.

Oneida Fox Roye, Ph.D., M.Ed., became the first Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Officer for Massachusetts’s Dedham Public Schools in 2020, and is formerly a literacy coach.

Pilar Quintero is a special education and bilingual teacher and reading specialist focused on equity, accessibility, and developing innovative instruction for elementary grade students of all languages and abilities.

Asha French, Ph.D., is a writer, scholar, textbook consultant, and curriculum developer who has written for Ebony, the New York Times, Women’s Media Center, and Mutha magazine.

Bunkong Tuon, is an Associate Professor of Ethnic American Literature at Union College. His research focus includes Asian American studies, trauma studies, testimonial discourse, and folklore studies.

Odia Wood-Krueger, M.Ed., has expertise in outdoor education practices and First Nations literature, and currently creates culturally relevant, Native American-specific curricula.

Beryl Bregsi has bachelor’s and master’s degrees in Psychology and a master’s degree in Library Science, and has taught in New York and Israel about the Holocaust and its impact on history and human behavior.

Karla Estrada, Ed.D., is an educational leader who works to improve outcomes for students with disabilities and provides professional development to leaders, teachers, paraprofessionals, and parents.

Shareen Cruz is Director of Content and Curriculum Special Projects for the District of Columbia Public Schools, focusing on Early Literacy Acceleration, Dual Language Expansion, and Curriculum Redesign.

Maria Campanario, M.Ed., C.A.G.S., ABD, is a teacher and administrator focused on project-based learning, literacy, academic language development, English Language Learners, and special education. 

Represent is created by a diverse team of acclaimed authors and illustrators who craft authentic texts that reflect own voices storytelling and feature underrepresented groups.

Ludaika Polanco is an author, engineer, and mother. She graduated from Texas A&M University. 

Grade K:  I Can Too

Edison Montero is an artist and illustrator. He lives in the Dominican Republic. 

Taylor Michael is a fellow at Columbia University School of the Arts.

Grade 1:  10,000 Men Named George

Greg Wood grew up with his parents’ tales of life in Indonesia.

Grade 2:  Sparks the Dragon

Nabila Adani is an artist who lives in Jakarta, Indonesia.

Elizabeth Engelman grew up in Puerto Rico, New York, and Florida. She is an award-winning novelist, essayist, and poet. 

Grade 3:  Boricua!

Crystal Allen is an award-winning children’s book author and writing teacher. 

Grade 4:  Buffalo

Lonnie Ollivierre was born in Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, grew up in Brooklyn, and ow lives in Georgia. 

Anna Harber Freeman comes from a long line of engineers, scientists, and book lovers, and is a member of the Osage Nation. 

Grade 5:  Starwatchers: Native American Space Scientists

Jennifer Torres started her career as a newspaper reporter. Now, she writes fiction books about home, friendship, and unexpected courage. 

Grade 6:   Sidekicks

Charlene Bo is a comic artist and illustrator living in Texas. She graduated from the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley

    Students will utilize higher-order thinking as they practice their close reading skills for fiction and nonfiction. All questions have identified DOK levels.
  • Content Activity Cards
    Inquiry projects are provided for each text, empowering students to take ownership of their learning and deepen science and social studies content knowledge.
